Our Father in Heaven
Message Notes:
The Lord’s Prayer falls in the middle of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount — communicating that it is “central to everything we do for Jesus.”
Jesus’ teaching about prayer:
•Matthew 6:1 — a generalized statement
•Matthew 6:5-8 — general teaching about prayer
•Matthew 6:9-13 — The Lord’s Prayer
Focus for this message:
•Matthew 6:9 — “Our Father who is in heaven.”
•It is “simple and short”
•We tend to recite it too quickly — not thoughtfully
•Because of that, we tend to miss deeper aspects of the prayer.
•We must learn to prayerfully interact with every word and line within the prayer.
Discussion Questions:
The focus of Byron’s message is with the contrasting truths about God’s nature (“a father” who is “in heaven”).
•What does it mean that “God is our Father?”
•What does it mean that “God is in heaven?”
•What happens when people overemphasize one aspect of God’s nature over another?
