Galatians 3:19–29 Discussion Questions

1. Icebreaker: Have you ever had a rule that didn't make sense to you at first but later realized it was for your good? What changed your perspective?

2. Before reading this passage, how would you have answered the question, "Why did God give the Law?" How does Paul's answer in verses 19–21 compare with your understanding?

3. Paul says the Law was "added because of transgressions." What do you think he means by that? What does this teach us about humanity's condition?

4. In verses 22–24, Paul describes the Law as both something that held people captiveand as a guardian (or tutor). How can both descriptions be true at the same time?

5. According to this passage, what could the Law accomplish, and what could it never accomplish? Why is that distinction so important for understanding the gospel?

6. Read verses 25–29. What changes for those who have placed their faith in Christ? Which phrase or promise in these verses stands out to you the most, and why?

7. Paul says that all who belong to Christ are children of God, one in Christ, and heirs according to the promise made to Abraham. How should these truths shape the way Christians view themselves and other believers?

8. God promised Abraham that through him all nations would be blessed, and Paul says believers are now heirs of that promise. What does it look like for Christians today to continue that mission of blessing others with the good news of Jesus?

9. Who are the people God has already placed in your life—family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, classmates—who may need to hear the hope of the gospel? What opportunities might God already be providing?

10. As you reflect on this passage, what is one practical step you can take this week to trust the Holy Spirit's leading and intentionally share the hope you have in Christ with someone else?
