Advent 2022 - How to Expect When You Are Expecting
How have you always defined the Advent season?
Have you ever been concerned about your readiness to meet Jesus one day?
In light of Nathan’s assertion that Advent is critical for followers of Jesus, consider the quote, “We cannot truly sing Joy to the World unless we have thoroughly rehearsed O Come, O Come Emmanuel”. Do you agree with that statement?
Preparing ourselves (sanctification) for Jesus should be a natural process for one who loves and follows the Lord. How can the short season of Advent be a time of practicing needed changes in our lives? How does this spill over into our lives beyond this season?
Read the first section of scripture regarding the angel visiting Mary - Luke 1:26-38
What stands out to you in the text as you look at Mary’s response (her question and closing resolution)?
Consider the dynamics of Mary’s experience becoming pregnant without having relations and being betrothed to Joseph. What difficulties would Mary have experienced in this time?
In your own words, what does it mean to have a heart of submission accepting God’s plan?
Translate this heart change into today’s context. What does this look like for you to adopt in your own life?
Nathan told the story of Jacob Smith, a blind skier. Explain how his father’s description of him teaches us some things about accepting God’s plan. (knowing limitations and not going it alone)
Read the 23rd Psalm from David. How does this show an attitude of submission to God in life?
What is God calling you to do this Advent season as you practice becoming what God desires by submitting to Him and accepting His plan?
Read the second section of scripture regarding Mary visiting Elizabeth - Luke 1:39-45
What stands out to you in the text as you look at Elizabeth’s interaction with Mary (how she describes Mary and the baby)?
Describe how Elizabeth gracefully accepts her role in God’s plan. How is this a by-product of one with a submissive heart towards God?
What makes the story about David Robinson so amazing?
Consider the quote from Thomas Merton, “Give me humility, in which alone is rest, and deliver me from pride, which is the heaviest of burdens”. Why should this be our prayer and commitment?
What could God be asking of you to change or implement in your life that possibly lowers your profile and uses you for His bigger plan?
What prideful motive in your life needs to change so that God can use you for His glory?
