Joseph's Example

Message Notes:

Today’s sermon will reflect on four passages that revolve around the life of Joseph, the stepfather of Jesus.

•Matthew 1:18-24

•Matthew 2:13-15

•Matthew 2:19-21

•Matthew 2:22-23

•In each passage above, there was (1) an incident, then (2) God confronted Joseph from within a dream, then (3) there is a response by Joseph. With each dream, Joseph responded to God’s guidance with unequivocal obedience.

Joseph’s obedience to God stands in contrast to many other characters in the Bible:

•Moses

•Isaiah

•Jeremiah

•Amos

•Zacharias (father of John the Baptist)

•Even Mary, the mother of Jesus

Obedience is the essence of the Christian life.

•Joseph displayed a willingness to obey even though the circumstances were difficult.

Jesus said: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

Discussion Questions:

Think about obedience:

•If God could get you’re a attention, in what area of your life would God desire most/next for you to be obedient?

•In what situations/circumstances is it most difficult for you to obey God?

Meditate upon the implications of the following:

•Jesus said: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)
