People of Significance

Message Notes:

Question: What would it look like to live a life of significance?

•If asked of the general public, there could/would be many different answers.

•Here is one answer from a Biblical perspective: James 5:20 — “Whoever brings back a sinner from their wandering will save their soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.”

Quote from St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel at all times -- if necessary, use words.”

This is how the apostle Paul created a life of significance:

•1 Corinthians 9:19 — “Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.”

This is how Jesus described a life of significance:

•Matthew 22:36-39 — 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” 37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Quote: The Greatest Blessings do not come to you when “Great Blessings” are your goal. “Great Blessings” are always a by-product of the servant life.

Discussion Questions:

What do you think would be some secular responses to the opening question:

•What would it look like to live a life of significance?

•Can you think of other Biblical responses to the question?

Look at the quote by St. Francis of Assisi.

•What would be some good ways to preach the gospel “without using words?”

Spend some time meditating on the three passages that Byron highlighted in today’s message:

•James 5:20

•1 Corinthians 9:19

•Matthew 22:36-39
