Pray Like This - Hallowed

Apr 26, 2026    Byron Beck

Message Notes:

Sermon #2 from the Lord’s Prayer:

Matthew 6:9 — “Hallowed be Your name.”

Byron will start this message with a story about a unique tattoo.

•Moral of the story: Sometimes we want something of value, importance or goodness. But we want it faster than the ordinary pathway without the necessary cost or effort.

Partial Quote by R.A. Torrey: “It takes time to be holy; one cannot be holy in a hurry.”

Today’s message theme: “Holy” or “Holiness.”

•Over 1000 times in the Bible

•This is a very important word in the Bible

•But it is difficult for us to understand during these days

Basic definition of “holy:”

•To be set apart

•Uniquely distinguished

•Separated from the common

•Consecrated for a specific, divine purpose

•Dedicated to God

Holiness does have a moral component to it:

•To be separated from sin, the world, and satan

•To be dedicated to God, His will and His ways

The point of the message:

•What is the meaning, from the Lord’s Prayer, of “Hallowed be Thy name?”

•“Hallowed” is a verb, not a noun

•It is a prayer asking God: “May everything I say or do make Your name holy.” Or, “Lord, help me live in a way that lifts Your name high in this world.”

Discussion Questions:

Quote from R.A. Torrey:

There is an old Christian hymn:       “Take Time to Be Holy." I wish we sang it more in these days. It takes time to be holy; one cannot be holy in a hurry, and much of the time that it takes to be holy must go into secret prayer. Some people express surprise that professing Christians today are so little like their Lord, but when I stop to think how little time the average Christian today puts into secret prayer  the thing that astonishes me is, not that we are so little like the Lord, but that we are as much like the Lord as we are.

•What do you think about this quote? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Holy or Holiness are words used to describe God’s nature or character. It is used “to describe Him” more than any other trait. Why do you think this is true? What is the significance or implication?
