God's Will
Message Notes:
The transformation of a caterpillar to a monarch butterfly is called by the scientific term: “metamorphosis.” I think it is important to understand that long before science coopted this term, the Bible was using it to describe what God wants to do in His people.
“Morphe” (Greek root word) refers to the form or shape of something; and with the various prefixes and suffixes attached to it, the word grows to describe “forming” and “shaping” that God wants to do with us.
A few Biblical examples:
•Galatians 4:19
•2 Corinthians 3:18
•Romans 12:2
The basic ideas that flow from the above verses:
•goal — “Christ in them”
•not always easy
•but possible
•not automatic
•a “discipleship” process
Important Observational Point: God does not force us to “be Christ-like.” He does not coerce spiritual maturity.
Four practical ways God helps us grow:
•Prayer (genuine heart connection with God)
•God’s Word
•the Body of Christ (accountability)
•Power and Working of the Holy Spirit
Growth is possible, but it is not easy:
•Romans 5:3-5
Discussion Questions:
Think about and describe a time in your life when you grew spiritually. Can you identify what was happening in your life at that time that contributed to your growth?
Think about and describe a time in your life when you digressed spiritually (spiritually lethargic). Can you identify what was happening in your life at that time that contributed to your struggles?
Think about your life and list three ways that your life diverges from that of Jesus.
•Also, spend some time thinking about the one, most important aspect of Jesus’ life that you would like to emulate. Spend some time this week praying for God’s help to do it.
