1 John 2:18-29

I. Recognize the Threat of Deception (vv. 18–19)

•John uses language like “last hour” and “antichrists” not to spark fear but to warn and protect.

•The term “antichrist” is not a single future person, but a classification of people opposed to Christ—both openly and subtly.

•These deceivers often come from within the church, making them more dangerous because they know how to twist the truth.

Key Verse:

“They went out from us, but they were not of us…” (v. 19)

II. Remember What You’ve Been Given (vv. 20–23)

•Believers have been anointed by the Holy Spirit and have access to all the knowledge they need.

•Deceivers often claim special or secret knowledge, but true believers don’t need anything outside of what God has already revealed.

•Access doesn’t equal expertise—we must engage with Scripture to grow in wisdom.

Key Verse:

“But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.” (v. 20)

III. Remain in the Truth and Walk Together (vv. 24–29)

A. Abide in Christ

•Stay connected to Jesus through Scripture, prayer, and obedience.

•Remaining in Him helps us stay on the right path and resist deception.

B. Confirm the Truth Regularly

•Truth must be pursued consistently, not assumed.

•We must test what we hear against God’s Word.

C. Walk in Community

•Faith was never meant to be lived alone.

•We protect each other through fellowship, accountability, and mutual encouragement.

Key Verse:

“Abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.” (v. 28)

Discussion Questions: (vv.18-19)

•Why do you think John uses such strong language to describe these deceivers?

•How might someone who once seemed part of the church become a danger to it?

•What makes deception from within the church more dangerous than from outside?

Discussion Questions: (vv. 20-23)

•What does it mean to be “anointed by the Holy One”?

•Why is it dangerous to believe someone who claims to have secret spiritual knowledge?

•How can we grow in using the knowledge we already have access to?

Discussion Questions: (vv.24-29)

•What does abiding in Christ look like in your daily life?

•Why is it important to continually confirm truth, even if we think we already know it?

•In what ways has community helped you stay faithful to Christ?

•What does your community look like—and how can you grow closer together in truth?
