Pray Like This - Thy Will Be Done
Message Notes:
Byron will begin his message with a series of illustrations that make a similar point:
•When you do God’s Will it does not mean your life will always be better or safer.
•The ten Boom family
•Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane (and the cross)
•The story of Jim Elliot and the missionary team to Ecuador
From Jesus we learn:
•Praying for God’s Will to be done involves a recognition that the accomplishment of His will for many may mean sacrifice and suffering for the individual.
Quote: God’s Will and the building of God’s Kingdom is greater and larger and more complex than any one of us.
And then, in Matthew 6:10 Jesus teaches us to pray (among other things):
•“Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
•This part of the prayer calls us to think beyond our shallow and selfish prayers — “God, bless me, help me, serve me, give to me, make my life better, etc.”
Matthew 6:10 says to us:
•God has a kingdom He wants established
•Not like the kingdoms of this world
•It is a kingdom where “God’s Will” is done
•Making earth look like heaven (love / health / beauty)
This part of His prayer teaches us (by implication, otherwise we would not be asked to pray for it):
•God’s will is not always done
•People are free to rebel against God and His will
This part of His prayer calls us to engage in:
•Personal formation
•Submission to God
•Aligning our will and priorities to His
•Personal revival
This prayer is not only for my life (But, larger than me):
•For the earth (corporately)
•For social structures
•For justice systems
•For the planet
•For worldwide revival
Discussion Questions:
Think about your prayer life. How selfish or self-centered is your prayer life?
•Put a percentage from your actual prayer time — how much is devoted to you and your family needs?
•How much do you pray for kingdom needs?
Spend some time improving your prayer list.
•Spend time praying for some missionaries. Click link (www.generalbaptist.com/where-we-are-working)
•Pray for the pastors and ministries of Fellowship GB Church.
•Pray for friends, neighbors, and fellow workers around you who are lost and apart from Jesus.
