New - New Attitude
Message Notes:
Byron begins his message with a story about a “young adult pastor” who made the following observation through his ministry:
•Some people like the benefits the Christian faith, but they struggle with anything that pushes back at their lifestyle or challenges their beliefs.
•The fact that the Bible challenges the lifestyle and beliefs of some people, has actually led some to reject Jesus.
•For them: Whatever they “feel” — constitutes truth.
The Big Question for this world:
•Will I allow the Bible to critique my life, culture and personal beliefs?
•Or, do I feel my beliefs and culture always stand above the Bible’s teachings?
It is important to note — the Bible constantly pushes to shape our feelings, beliefs and attitudes.
One such passage is Matthew 5:3-10; the “Beatitudes.” Today’s message will focus on Matthew 5:3-6 — the first four (out of eight) beatitudes. These four attitude can do much to promote change in our lives.
•(v.3) Poor in Spirit — One must realize he/she is spiritually impoverished before that person can grow.
•(v.4) Mourn — In fact, you should be so sick of your spiritual poverty, that it will burden your soul. When you are genuinely “sick-and-tired-of-being-sick-and-tired,” you are in the best position to change.
•(v. 5) Meek — This speaks to our need to be humble and submissive to the Word and will of God. One stops fighting against God, and humbly surrenders.
•(v.6) Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness — This calls us to passionately pursue a positive affection for God and His will. Change in our lives will most likely occur when we have a positive passion for God.
Discussion Questions:
What are the range of dangers involved in putting one’s feelings above the authority of the Bible? Why do people do this?
•In which ares of your life do you struggle most with this?
Look at the attitudes contained in the first four Beatitudes of Matthew 5:3-6.
•In which of these are you the strongest?
•In which are you weakest?
